At its height, Steward Health Care ran more than 30 private hospitals across the U.S. helmed by an ambitious CEO who touted a vision of high-quality cost-effective medical services. But as Steward expanded across America and sought to enter international markets, it was secretly lurching towards bankruptcy. The Steward Files reveal how private equity, real estate investors, top executives, and other vested interests drained vast sums from the hospital provider as it failed to pay its vendors and meet patients’ basic needs. Based on a trove of nearly 300,000 internal documents leaked from Steward Health Care to OCCRP and shared with the Boston Globe and the Times of Malta, the Steward Files show just how far hospital executives and investors went to cover up the chain’s financial distress while they enriched themselves.
