Montaza is a privately-owned Croatian engineering and construction firm that also deals in energy trading and gas and heat distribution. Based in Zagreb, it has offices worldwide, in Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and Libya.

Its activities include the construction of buildings, industrial plants, roads and ships, and hydro-engineering.

In January, board chairman Nikola Lisicar was shot by an unknown gunman as he was leaving his Zagreb house in the morning. Lisicar, who owned 30 percent of the company, died of his injuries the next month.

The company got into more trouble in October, when the Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency suspended all its trading for 60 days. The financial regulator alleged that Montmantaza was artificially increasing its share prices to attract investors.

The company does not publish its financial results, but according to a media report, it had sales of €100 million in 2005.

Montmontaza has a small regional trading business that has included sales in Albania, Montenegro and Slovenia and electricity purchases from the national Croatian utility company, EP RS, and from Romania and Bulgaria.
