Investigators say Laura Lee Sorsby, 62 and Nagy Shehata, 55, have been indicted on charges of wire fraud and money laundering. They allegedly convinced Said Haifawi, who opened Turkey’s first private hospital, to invest € 6 million (US$ 6.5 million) in 2010 to construct a shopping mall in the Turkish capital of Ankara, according to the Hurriyet Daily News.
Sorsby had met Haifawi in 2009, when they worked together on a project to open a hospital in Syria.
The suspects allegedly diverted the money for personal use while avoiding Haifawi for the next five years, the FBI said. Shehata bought a house for US$ 855,000 and a car for US$ 110,000, while Sorsby bought a US$ 163,000 house and US$ 77,000 car, the agency said.
Haifawi was hesitant to report the crime to the police before being contacted by the FBI in 2015. According to the Hurriyet Daily News, Haifawi was talked out of reporting the fraud because his advisors “said it would very difficult”to open a case in the United States.
If convicted, both suspects face up to 20 years in prison.
