Serbia: Accused Human Trafficker Arrested

Serbian police in Zajecar have arrested Ninoslav Horvat, allegedly a key figure in human trafficking in the Balkans.

Horvat, 39, and two alleged accompliceswhose names were not releasedwere arrested afterpolice tried to stop two vans with foreign license plates in Zajecar. The report, dated Dec. 10, said that the suspects blocked the road with one of their vans in an attempt to escape.

When the police apprehended both vans, they found 46 Afghan citizens they said crossed the Bulgaria-Serbian border illegally. The report said the vans were hired in Germany, and were overdue for return to rental agencies. Horvat, who was already under investigation for illegal border crossing and human trafficking, is being heldfor questioning. Authorities have permission to hold him for up to a month.
