Mexico: Son of Top Drug Cartel Leader Arrested

News

Mexican marines have arrested Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, the son of Mexico’s most wanted drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. El Chapo is the alleged leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel. His 26-year-old son was arrested in the central Mexican state of Jalisco, authorities announced Thursday.

According to Jose Luis Vergara, a spokesman for the Mexican Navy, Jesus Guzman “controlled most of the Sinaloa cartel's illegal drug trade between Mexico and the United States." He added that Jesus Guzman managed most of his father’s property.

Jesus Guzman was indicted in the US on drug trafficking charges in 2009. The US Treasury Department issued sanctions against the father and son, freezing their US-based assets and forbidding US citizens from doing business with them.

Together with another detainee accused of belonging to the Sinaloa cartel, Kevin Beltran Rios, Guzman was transferred to Mexico City. It is still undecided if he will be tried there or extradited to the United States.
