The Guardian reports that police arrested Giuseppe Ferraro, 47, and Giuseppe Crea, 37, of the ‘Ndrangheta, who both were on Italy’s list of most dangerous fugitives.
Ferraro, who was convicted in absentia for a string of murders, had been a fugitive for 18 years while Crea, wanted for Mafia association and extortion, had been a fugitive for 10 years, according to the Guardian.
According to Prosecutor Federico Cafiero De Raho, the two were “living like animals…cut off from society.” The men were living in a small concrete bunker that was concealed by bushes and trees, according to the Guardian.
The BBC reports that the men were allegedly managing other gang members from the bunker that also had cooking equipment and electricity. The police involved in the raid also found a submachine gun, along with pistols and rifles hanging on the wall, according to the Guardian.
The 'Ndrangheta, based in Calabria, was formed in the 1860s and is involved in kidnappings, corruption, drug trafficking, gambling and murders, according to CNN. It allegedly controls much of the world’s cocaine trade as the most powerful syndicate in Europe, according to the Guardian.
