Gaetano, 79 years old, was apprehended along with two other members of the Riina family and another unidentified man, as a result of a three year long investigation of the organized crime families in Corleone.
Gaetano took leadership of the family when Toto was arrested 1993 and though he was not living in Corleone at the time, police identified him as the leader.
This is only one of many arrests of suspected mob bosses and members of the mafia across the country as a result of the investigation into organized crime and drug trafficking. Last week police apprehended 12 members of the ‘Ndrangheta family in Calabria, while 5 members of the Camorra family were arrested in Naples.
Italian Police have been cracking down on organized crime not only by arresting members of the mafia, but investigating corruption as well. A high ranking police officer is now under investigation for his connections to organized crime and money laundering, as Press TV reported on Thursday.
