Italy: 35 Arrested for Human Trafficking

Italian authorities are hopeful that the Italian Anti-Mafia Agency’s first investigation into human trafficking has dissolved a ring reaching from Afghanistan to northern Europe. Arrest warrants were issued for 35 people after raids Wednesday in Milan, Rome, Leece and Bologna. Fox News reports that some of those arrested were Afghan nationals.

The Interior Ministry of Bulgaria has arrested 50 people so far in a nationwide operation still underway titled “Shock” that is aimed at stolen vehicles, smuggled goods and people wanted by various governments.

Egypt: New Law Bans Illegal Organ Sales

A new law banning the sale of human organs goes into effect in Egypt this week.  Organ traffickers will face severe repercussions and violators, especially foreigners, will be subject to long jail sentences and costly fines.  Organ transplants will now only be performed in hospitals with voluntarily donated organs.

The Turkish Organized Crime Department began arresting people this weekend as part of one of the largest investigations into football corruption ever in the country. So far, at least 59 people across 12 provinces, including three club presidents and some notable players, have been taken in for suspicion of fixing games.

 

 

Co-Founder of Mexican Drug Cartel Los Zetas Apprehended

A senior leader of Los Zetas, the narcotics trafficking gang that controls most of Mexico’s east coast, has been captured, the Mexican security agency announced in a statement on Monday.

Jesus Enrique Rejon, known as “The Mummy”, was arrested in a suburb of Mexico City along with a local policeman serving as his bodyguard.  No shots were fired.

Rejon, 35, was the third in command of what the U.S. government has called “the most technologically advanced, sophisticated and dangerous cartel operating in Mexico.”

Italian authorities arrested alleged extortionist and mafia leader Gaetano Riina, brother and successor of the infamous Toto Riina, in Sicily Today. Toto Riina is currently in prison serving multiple life sentences for the slew of murders and other crimes committed during his reign as the “boss of bosses” of the Sicilian Mafia.

Colombian Drug Boss Arrested After Ten Year Hunt

Bolivian authorities arrested and extradited leader in drug trafficking network.

Bolivian Police arrested a high ranking member of the notorious United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) on Tuesday, and extradited him to his home country of Colombia on Wednesday. Carlos Noel Buitrago Vega aka Porremacho is wanted for more than 50 counts of drug trafficking, mass murder and kidnappings, according to Bolivian Interior Minister Sacha Llorenti.

 

Group Arrested in Moldova for Uranium Trafficking

Group attempted to sell enriched uranium from Russia.

Six people were arrested by Moldovan police for the smuggling and intended sale of roughly 1 kg (2 lbs) of uranium-235 on Wednesday. The BBC reports Vitalie Briceag, an official with the Interior Ministry, stated that the uranium, worth almost $29 million dollars, was acquired in Russia.
