OCCRP Discussion on ‘NarcoFiles’: Journalists Talk Investigating Latin American Organized Crime

Announcement

This week, OCCRP and 40 media partners published “NarcoFiles: The New Criminal Order,” a major project that shed new light on the inner workings of modern-day organized crime in Latin America.

November 8, 2023

Three of the lead journalists behind the project — Nathan Jaccard (OCCRP), Kevin Hall (OCCRP) and Maria Teresa Ronderos (CLIP) — will talk about their year-long reporting effort in a live OCCRP Discussion on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 10:30 U.S. Eastern Time // 16:30 Central European Time.

To join webinars like these, you must become a member of OCCRP’s Accomplice program. All donations to Accomplice directly fund our global network of journalists.

NarcoFiles, led by OCCRP and El Centro Latinoamericano de Investigación Periodística (CLIP), is primarily based on a leak of over seven million emails from the Colombian prosecutor’s office. The trove was initially obtained in 2022 by a group of “hacktivists” known as Guacamaya.

The leak reveals rare details about how transnational criminal gangs in Latin America have evolved over the years to adapt to more sophisticated law enforcement as well as a globalized market for narcotics.

In this 45-minute webinar, you can expect journalists to discuss:

  • Criminal Empires: How organized crime groups have fanned out around the globe, permeating economies, corrupting authorities, and expanding their reach across borders.

  • New Business Models: How criminal gangs are innovating and evolving their business models in the face of new economic incentives and opportunities for experimentation.

  • The Murky World of Ports: Commercial ports have become a hotbed of criminal activity, from Antwerp and Rotterdam to Gioia Tauro, Guayaquil, Santa Marta, and Limón.

  • Dark Money: The underground flows of illicit drug profits and the financial professionals who help enable these crimes.

  • Green Crimes: The environmental impact of organized crime, and how their activities are destroying wildlife, polluting rivers, and threatening protected areas.

  • Police and Thieves: The role of law enforcement agencies who are on the front lines in the fight against organized crime — but sometimes become part of the problem.

There will also be time for questions from the audience at the end.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the webinar will now start thirty minutes earlier than previously advertised. Don’t worry if you can’t attend the new time. Every OCCRP Accomplice will receive a recording of the webinar once it’s over.
