Between 2005 and 2007 McPhail paid monthly bribes, a total of about $45,000, to two public officials working for the main transportation provider for the US Navy, Military Sealift Command. In federal court in Norfolk, Virginia, he was ordered to forfeit $57,000 and sentenced to 36 months in prison plus three years of supervision upon release.
Four other employees, both from Military Sealift Command and from Company A, pled guilty to various charges regarding their involvement in the scheme days before McPhail confessed. They were sentenced for taking more than $265,000 in cash bribes. Two other individuals have been indicted and await trial.
McPhail admitted the bribes were paid to get favorable treatment for his company, according to the Navy Times.
