The suspects, three Poles, two Italians, two Ukrainians, and a woman from Moldova, were arrested around the cities of Krakow and Lublin, in the south and east of the country respectively.

The volume of bonds seized is a record for the anti-corruption bureau, said spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski.

It is unknown whether any of the counterfeit bonds entered the market.

Last month, Italian anti-mafia prosecutors seized fake U.S. bonds worth US$6 trillion, a record seizure. America’s public debt is estimated at US$12 trillion.
