Position Overview

We are seeking a  skilled, energetic investigative journalist to join our Paraguay and Latin American team. This is a job for an independent, critical thinker with a strong news sense, that will support OCCRP’s effort in Paraguay. This role is ideal for a journalist with 5 years experience.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with OCCRP’s Latin American team, Paraguay editor and global team on collaborative investigative stories, with special focus on Paraguay and neighboring countries.

  • Work with local and international partners on collaborative investigative stories.

  • Generating story ideas and producing investigations in the country and in the region on topics related to organized crime, corruption, environmental crimes, among others.

  • Following up published stories.

  • Complex, document-based reporting to a high evidentiary standard.

  • Searching regional and global databases.

  • Obtaining public records and other information in Paraguay.

  • Working with large datasets.

  • Building and maintaining sensitive source relationships.

  • Help with research for different projects as requested and get information such as documents and data for stories.

Person Description

Skills

  • Fluency in English and in Spanish. Portuguese knowledge is a plus.

  • Strong reporter’s instincts and nose for a story.

  • A fierce sense of independence and resistance to pressure.

  • Ability to find patterns in large amounts of information.

  • Ability to order your ideas and write in a concise, engaging style.

  • Established competence with database searching and familiarity with how to obtain public documents such as company registrations, property records, and court files.

  • Competence with online search.

  • It’s vital for this role to have a deep understanding of politics, business and society in Paraguay and the surrounding countries.

  • Candidates must be committed to maintaining high standards of confidentiality to ensure the safety of our sources and reporters.

Experience

  • At least five years news reporting experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in producing in-depth reporting, such as features and investigations.

  • Have published document-based investigative reports.

  • Have published in-depth articles on issues related to organized crime and corruption.
