According to the Los Angeles Times portal, 48-year-old Mai Nhu Nguyen, who worked for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Santa Ana for eight years, pleaded guilty to receiving bribes between July 2011 and May 2013, and was sentenced on Oct. 3. Using her authority as an immigration officer, she collected thousands of dollars for approving citizenship and green cards.
The Examiner portal writes about a case in which Nguyen ordered 300 egg rolls and told an immigration applicant to pay for the $150 food order and deliver it to her workplace for a party. In exchange, she approved the applicants’ paperwork.
In another instance, the officer approved permanent residency for an applicant after receiving US$ 1,000. After federal authorities put her under surveillance, she was arrested in June 2013 after officers saw her receiving US$ 2,200 from another applicant.
According to the LA Times, when arrested she “immediately dropped the cash-filled envelope but was still carrying the lunch of egg rolls and dessert that she had also demanded the applicant bring, according to an affidavit in the case.”
