Authorities in Mexico are investigating a 20-year-old man who confessed to killing 45 people and claims membership in an unidentified gang.  Officials announced on Thursday that the confessed killings by Juan Pablo Vazquez are being looked into along with 34 additional deaths.

Reuters reports that Vazquez was caught earlier in October in the Mexican city of Monterrey for allegedly selling drugs along with a 25-year-old woman.

Jorge Domene, a spokesman for state security forces told reporters that Vasquez "is related to at least 79 murders, most of them committed in 2012."  Domene said that Vasquez admitted to directly taking part in 45 homicides and is connected to 34 other killings.

Monterrey, the capital of the northern state of Nuevo Leon, has been host to significant drug cartel violence in recent years according to AFP.  More than 77,000 people have been killed in gang violence since 2006 in Monterrey, which is home to four million, making it Mexico's third largest city.

According to Reuters, about 1,000 people die each month in Mexico due to gang violence.
