As the Lebanese economy spiraled, the man many citizens blamed for the crisis, Central Bank Governor Riad Salame, was rumored to have a fortune overseas.
Then in 2020, OCCRP and Daraj revealed hard evidence to substantiate these rumors. We found roughly $100 million of investments tied to Salame. Prosecutors in several European countries opened criminal investigations into the former central banker for alleged embezzlement and other abuses of office.
The assets we uncovered were just the tip of the iceberg — and many of them may be seized by authorities. In early August, Salame was sanctioned by the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, which also designated his brother, son, and former assistant.
Join Alia Ibrahim, co-founder of Daraj.com, and OCCRP’s Senior Investigator Tom Stocks for a discussion about these sanctions, the impact of our reporting, and what message the sanctions send to Lebanese elites.
The 45-minute webinar, moderated by OCCRP Accomplice Manager Charles Turner, will take place on Thursday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m. EDT/5:00 p.m. EEST.
There will be an opportunity for listeners to ask questions at the end.
